An ancestral identity

Freestyle HOPS believes in and respects the Maori values of kaitiakitanga (the safeguarding and care of the resources) of their land, they know themselves to be responsible and guardians of its health and vitality. Exceptional hops can only come from healthy soils. Particular attention is paid to regenerative agricultural practices, growing hops without spraying, using varied inter-row plantings and taking the greatest care of the soil.

Bruce Eggers grew hops on this same Sunrise Valley farm for more than 50 years. In 2017, Freestyle Hops took over the Sunrise Valley hop farm and expanded it to what it is today. They grow, harvest, pelletize, package, sell and ship the hops grown on their 300+ acre farm to brewers around the world.

Freestyle HOPS varieties

Freestyle HOPS grows Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, Riwaka, Waimea, Rakau, Pacifica, Wakatu, Southern Cross and NZ Cascade. They also produce two blends. The Bruce is a blend of varieties their unique terroir. Kohia Nelson combines Nelson Sauvin with passion fruit powder.
